Supplements

Supplements can be a complex and confusing topic. Social media, magazine ads and television gurus promote seemingly endless supplement suggestions and health claims.

So what do I need to know?

Do your research.

Always read supplement labels to inform yourself on contents and recommended use and dosage. The FDA does not require supplements to be approved for safety or effectiveness before hitting the market therefore not everything on the market can be assumed safe or effective.

Be aware of dangers.

Some supplements can actually be harmful to your health. Stay away from bitter orangegermaniumchaparrel and aconite.

Know your acronyms.

Different acronyms are used to advise on supplement dosage levels. Being familiar with dietary reference intake (DRI), recommended dietary allowance (RDA) and tolerable upper intake level (UL) is a good start.

Talk to your doctor.

Supplements can interact with some medications or interfere with their absorption, metabolization and potency. Always talk to your doctor, pharmacist or health store advisor before beginning a new supplement routine.

Why should I take supplements?

Most people take supplements to:

  1. Improve overall health and wellness
  2. Fill a deficiency in their diet
  3. Support their immune system
  4. Improve bone and joint health
  5. Increase energy and performance

The most commonly taken supplements are:

  • Protein
  • Calcium
  • Probiotics
  • Magnesium
  • Multivitamins & minerals
  • Vitamin D
  • Omega oils

Now what?

Ideally, eating a balanced diet provides your body with all of the nutritional fuel it needs to operate properly. Unfortunately, injury, illness or even just the demands of everyday can cause us to get off track with our routines. Combined with differences in absorption and metabolism, it can be difficult to ensure our bodies get the nutritional fuel they need. Supplements can be a part of regime to give your body what it needs and help you get back to your best self. Professional advice from a doctor, nutritionist or pain management coach is essential to finding the best program for you.
